Why Do Cotton Sheets Wrinkle?

There is nothing better than sleeping in a comfortable, fresh pair of sheets after a long day.  Innkeepers and property owners take great pride in making sure their guests are sleeping on the best quality sheets possible.  For as long as you can remember, you have been supplying your rooms with 100% cotton sheets.  While your guests rave about how comfortable they were the night before, you see the amount of work your staff has to do to keep them in good shape.  They dedicate a lot of time to ironing to make them look brand new for the next guests.  You ask yourself why it is that 100% cotton sheets keep wrinkling and if there is anything you can do about it.

Heat

The two primary factors that cause cotton to wrinkle are heat and humidity.  Cotton is held together by many microscopic fibers and particles.  When heat is applied, the bonds holding those fibers together get broken down.  This allows the fibers to become more flexible and move into different positions in the cotton.  Once the temperature decreases, these fibers now become locked into the new positions that they formed because they can’t move freely without the added heat.  As a result, wrinkles will become deeper and more noticeable as the temperature continues to rise.

Humidity

Humidity can also cause cotton to wrinkle.  Moisture causes the fibers in the cotton to become enlarged because water is being absorbed.  This also allows the bonds to begin to shift around which leads to wrinkling.  Typically, you would think this would occur when you are extremely sweaty, in a hot and humid environment, or if liquid spilled on the sheets.  However, wrinkling can still occur when you wouldn’t expect it.  Someone may be sleeping on the sheets in a room that is not very hot or moist.  However, the part of the sheet that they are laying on top of could be prone to wrinkles as the temperature and humidity will likely be increased from the body of the individual.

Ironing is Important

If you do have sheets that wrinkle, the best way to remove the wrinkles is through ironing.  It’s an interesting process by how an iron removes wrinkles.  The steam from the iron causes the bonds to become more flexible again because of the heat and moisture it provides.  The pressing of the iron on the linen causes the fibers to become realigned in the proper way, and then the heat makes the water evaporate.  Once the water is evaporated, the fibers will be back in their normal formation which eliminates the wrinkles.  By doing all of these steps at once, the iron is highly effective at removing wrinkles.  However, this process can be long and tiresome especially if you have a lot of linens to iron.
