2023 State of the Hospitality Industry: A Wave of Possibilities

2023 State of the Hospitality Industry

The hospitality industry should prepare for a wave of possibilities in 2023.  Economic issues remain a concern as politicians and economists continue to warn the public about a potential recession in 2023.  This could make it difficult for forecasting travel and guest expectations.  The landscape of what people are looking for when traveling will continue to change through a new trend called slow travel.  Technology is also continuing to rapidly expand across all industries, so hospitality should expect to see some more advancements, particularly with property websites.  Also, properties will put an increased focus on training and employee retention given the chaos the pandemic caused for them and many other industries over the past few years.

Community Responses to the Rapid Growth of Short-Term Rental Properties

The number of short-term rental properties is growing rapidly across the United States and internationally.  They will continue to have a major impact on the hospitality industry both now and in the years to come.  For most of modern history, it was expected that travelers would stay at inns, bed and breakfasts, or hotels.  While these types of properties will still have their importance in hospitality, the trend is shifting to rental properties thanks to websites like VRBO and Airbnb.  Short-term rental properties are becoming more and more common in many towns across the United States.  These towns are taking measures to plan for the surging demand of property owners looking to buy short-term rentals.

Hybrid and Remote Workers will Boost Business for Hospitality Properties

The hospitality industry has experienced major changes over the past two and a half years.  Forces outside of the industry’s control have changed the way it operates and how guests travel.  The industry has been forced to deal with issues like staffing shortages and supply chain issues on a month-to-month basis.  However, folks working in this industry and running the properties have been resilient and ready to adapt their business operations to meet the constantly changing day-to-day operations.  Some changes to the industry will likely remain permanent.  The new way guests travel is a trend likely to stay.  The pandemic brought a major shift to remote work for many companies.  The hybrid work schedule has created new terms that hospitality workers need to be familiar with, and there are new opportunities available for properties to attract hybrid or remote workers to their properties.

Sustainability in Hospitality: Organic Linens, OEKO-TEX®, and GOTS Certifications

Sustainability is becoming more important than ever to hospitality.  Properties are making it a top priority to take care of their guests while also looking out for the well-being of the environment.  They have begun monitoring their water usage, analyzing ways to reduce energy, and started to eliminate the use of plastic and food waste.  With each passing year, it seems that more and more people are looking to support businesses that promote a healthy environment.  Linens are another area where properties can promote sustainability.  Two key certifications to look out for on linens are OEKO-TEX® and GOTS.  Organic products and these two certifications are important to promoting sustainability and a healthier environment.

The Endless Opportunities of a Career in Hospitality

Many people enjoy their career in the hospitality industry.  Common jobs include innkeepers, hotel managers, cleaners, short-term rental hosts, etc.  Many hospitality jobs can be an intriguing option for those who have always had a passion for working with people.  Others who entered the industry may have been working in a different career and were looking for a new opportunity.  People may have also felt that jobs in this industry didn’t feel like work because they could be on their feet all day, in a beautiful location, and using their hobbies to make people happy like cooking and baking.

Proper Guest Boundaries and Expectations can Give Your Hospitality Property an Advantage

A former Florida innkeeper once said, “Transparency is always the best policy when it comes to guests at your property. Even the smallest inconvenience can become a huge point of contention if the guest feels they’ve been misled. Likewise, even large inconveniences become manageable if they’re expected. Give the guest an opportunity to cancel, and they might! But those are the guests who would have left angry and posted about it on Google, so it’s for the best in the end.”

White vs. Colored Towels

One of the most difficult parts of being a property manager is deciding the property’s style and decorative options.  Not everyone agrees on what is best, and these types of choices are often a matter of opinion.  Some of these tough choices can be made for bed linens, furniture, paint colors, and carpet choices.  The bathroom is no exception to style options.  A frequently pondered question is what color the towels should be.  Does your property have white or colored towels?  White and colored towels each come with their own pros and cons.  Most standard hotels provide white towels, but colored towels still have their place and may be able to help your property stand out.

Inflation’s Effect on Hospitality Properties

The hospitality industry is still finding its share of highs and lows even as life has begun returning to normal.  Thankfully, traveling is back which is bringing business back to hotels, bed and breakfasts, rental properties, restaurants, etc.  This has led to an increase in guest reservations and bookings for many properties.  But there are various obstacles the industry needs to confront like global affairs, effects of the pandemic, staffing issues, and supply chain issues.  A lot of these problems come down to the basic principles of supply and demand and inflation.
