There are fewer things more comforting than a blanket.
Charles Schulz didn’t just invent the idea of a security blanket – excuse the pun – out of whole cloth with Linus in the Peanuts cartoons. Children have long turned to blankets to provide a sense of well-being.
And while we may outgrow our need to keep our blankets – or teddy bears or whatever comfort objects we trusted – our need to sleep with a warm, comfortable blanket never goes away.
That’s something to keep in mind when running a hotel, bed and breakfast or vacation rental property. Your guests want a good night’s sleep, and that means finding the right bedding.
Although most people buy blankets according to the size of their beds, we’re often asked about the standard blanket sizes. Here’s how it breaks down.
Standard blanket sizes
- Twin – 66 inches by 90 inches
- Double – 80 inches by 90 inches
- Queen – 90 inches by 90-100 inches
- King – 108 inches by 90-100 inches
Keep in mind that the size of your blankets will also depend on the thickness of your mattress.
For twin beds:
- A mattress that’s 10 inches thick should have a blanket that’s 60 inches by 88 inches
- A mattress that’s 14 inches thick should have a blanket that’s 90 inches by 88 inches
- A mattress that’s 22 inches thick should have a blanket that’s 90 inches by 88 inches
For queen-sized beds:
- A mattress that’s 10 inches thick should have a blanket that’s 90 inches by 88 inches
- A mattress that’s 14 inches thick should have a blanket that’s 108 inches by 88 inches
- A mattress that’s 22 inches thick should have a blanket that’s 120 inches by 88 inches
For king-sized beds:
- A mattress that’s 10 inches thick should have a blanket that’s 108 inches by 88 inches
- A mattress that’s 14 inches thick should have a blanket that’s 120 inches by 88 inches
- A mattress that’s 22 inches thick should have a blanket that’s 130 inches by 110 inches
There’s more to blankets, however, than the standard blanket sizes. You’ll also want to choose the right fabric for your blankets. There are several common blanket fabrics, all with their own selling points:
- Cotton – A durable material that can handle repeated washings. Cotton blankets come in different weaves, meaning that you’ll be able to find versions that are warm enough for winter or light enough for summer use.
- Down – Lightweight but very warm, down blankets have a layer of feathers inserted between two layers of fabric. If you’re concerned about allergies, you can find a synthetic alternative.
- Synthetics – This category includes things like polyester, acrylic and microfiber. Warm and typically inexpensive.
- Wool – An ideal choice for people seeking a warm, heavy blanket, but note that – as with down – some people might be allergic to these blankets.
- Vellux – Popular in hotels, these blankets feature a foam core under a soft nylon plush. Warm, soft and durable, they are also hypoallergenic.

I want a queen size blanket but in the sizes they come in cm. What would a queen size blanket be in the cm.
A queen size in cm should be close to 244 x 244 although sizes can vary by manufacturer. A queen/full will be smaller. I hope this helps. If you have any other questions don’t hesitate to call us at 1-800-877-4667.

A mattress that is 80 inches long and 10 inches thick requires a blanket that is more than 90 inches long. In order to tuck it in at the foot of the bed, you need another 6 inches at least. I can’t begin to imagine the thought that goes into making a 90 inch long blanket to put on a queen size bed.
Hi David,
A typical Queen size mattress is 79 inches from top to bottom. The blanket is usually laid onto the bed 6 inches below the top of the mattress, giving you 17 inches at the bottom of the bed to tuck the blanket. The Queen mattress is about 60 inches across, so a Queen blanket that is 90″x90″ gives you 15 inches on each side of the mattress to tuck. Some of our blankets are actually longer than 90 inches. Check out the Cotone Cable Blanket that is 96 inches long, or the Kingston that is 100 inches long. If you need more help with blanket sizes, we are happy to consult with you on this or any other linen issue. Just call 1-800-877-4667.
I would like to second David’s comment. I foolishly bought a 90×90 blanket for a 12″ thick queen size mattress and I can barely tuck it in at the foot of the bed. I need to buy another blanket and I really appreciate your numbers for queen blankets based on the thickness! I might add that we usually place the blanket more like 4″ from the top of the bed, because we like it like that. I’m not an inkeeper, just a person who likes the blanket tucked in.
Hi Karen,
Thanks for the comment. If there is anything else we can do for you don’t hesitate to call us at 1-800-877-4667.
In my opinion, a blanket is meant to protect the mattress from wear and tear that makes the sewn edges threadbare. If that is the case, then a blanket is expected to be tucked in head down and on the sides. One would then need the excess on all sides for this purpose.
My take please.
Hi Akinkugbe,
Thank you for your comment. I would recommend a mattress encasement to protect the mattress because they are waterproof and protect from bed bugs as well. This also protects the warranty on your mattress that becomes void if the mattress becomes stained. Blankets can’t really do that.
I’m so glad I came across this site! I’ve been debating about what size blanket I need for an 80 x 60 Queen size mattress that’s 12 inches deep. I reluctantly bought a King size (90 x 108) and I’m so glad that I did. The longer length makes it perfect for tucking in at the bottom of the mattress. The Queen size version is only 90 x 90, and I had concerns that it would be too short. This page made me realize that a Queen blanket would have been way too short. Thank you!
My bed is full bed but the natress is only 8 inches thick, What do I need for a blanket
Hi Marcel,
I would recommend a Full size blanket as opposed to a Full/Queen. The Hospitality Star blanket gives you about 5 inches on each side to tuck in. For more information or recommendations please call the office at 267-354-6020. We are happy to help you.
