The search for the right blanket can depend on the climate where you live, but also on the person with whom you share your home.
Let us know if this sounds familiar: You get cold at night. Your husband or wife gets too hot. You want a blanket. They don’t.
Our new blanket was made for couples like you.
It is called Keep the Peace, and it’s designed to do just that.
Keep the Peace Bedding is a unique couple’s bedding system that lets partners rest comfortably according to their different body temperatures, giving both of you a better night sleep and thus keeping the peace in the bedroom.
Our temperature-controlling bedding options come in a variety of luxurious materials, including our lightweight goose down, lightweight synthetic down, cotton matelassé, and our bamboo matelassé. Besides choosing your material, fill, etc. you can choose not to have on your side of the bed, by unzipping the bedding.
Blankets for Every Climate
If you are looking for a lightweight blanket, consider choosing a cotton weave fabric. It has thermal properties, providing warmth and insulation by trapping body heat and forming a warm layer next to the skin, thereby increasing heat retention.
In addition, waffle weave fabric is highly absorbent and available in a variety of weights, and comes in many styles, including waffle, checkerboard, basketweave and herringbone. (Follow the tag on the blanket for washing and drying instructions.)
An acrylic, acrylic/cotton or acrylic/polyester blanket will be sufficient for most climates. These blankets come in many colors and varieties, including English Hotel, St. Moritz, Loft, Velvet and Polartec. (which is polyester fleece like the outerwear we love to wear). These are all machine washable and dryable.
For colder weather, your best choice is a blanket made from a heavier material: wool, merino wool, down or down alternative.
These blankets need more care when cleaning. Many down blankets & wool blankets need to be dry cleaned. The down alternative blankets can be cleaned on property, as long as you have larger washers and dryers.
Many of our customers use a down or down alternative blanket as a third sheeting instead of a traditional blanket. It is a good choice for those who do “turn-down” service as it looks lovely when guests return to their room after dinner.
Here are a few other things to consider when picking a blanket:
- Remember that body temperature drops in the first few hours of sleep, so people can wake up if they’re not warm enough. At the same time, that same temperature drop helps us stay asleep, so a too-warm blanket can rouse us from our slumber.
- Sleep experts say a softer blanket can help people rest. A gentler fabric can soothe the skin and help your guests sleep.
- Finally, if you’re an hotelier, don’t be offended if a guest brings a blanket from home. A security blanket isn’t just for small children. “Adults can also have serious preferences for a particular blanket,” says Dr. Alice Hoagland in Psychology Today magazine. “Regularly using a favorite blanket for sleep can help to develop a conditioned response so that sleep onset is quicker.”
