Hospitality Industry 101: How to Become an Innkeeper

It’s the start of a new year.  It often marks a time where people wonder if they should make changes in their life including their career.  Are you already working in the hospitality industry or have you thought about joining it?  While becoming an innkeeper can be challenging, we hope this blog will help make your preparations easier if this is something you are interested in pursuing.  Whether you want to break into the hospitality industry or if you are already in the industry, we will recommend some start-up items that will get you started and keep you going.  There is a wide range of products that will be needed to satisfy your guests.  This can include food and beverages, entertainment, and linens such as bedding, towels, and napkins.

Sheets

* For linens, one of the most important decisions to make will be your sheeting.

*Sheets can include a flat sheet, fitted sheet, one or two pillowcases, and possibly a top sheet.

*There is a wide selection of sheets you can choose from including 100% cotton, cotton polyester, microfiber, or organic sheets.

*100% cotton sheets are very comfortable and the natural fibers wick away moisture, but they usually require ironing.

*Cotton polyester sheets are popular because they are easy care and wrinkle resistant.

*Microfiber sheets are usually offered at the most economical price, and organic sheets have the best impact on the environment.

*Along with the type of sheets, it’s important to make sure you have enough sheets stocked.  Sheets can rip, stain, or even get lost.

*We recommend having at least three sets of sheets available per bed.  This way, you have one set of sheets on the bed, one in the wash, and one stored in a closet for backup.

*Our most popular sheet is the InnStyle 600 Wrinkle Free Sheet.

Top of the Bed

*There are numerous options that include a blanket, duvet cover, top sheet, coverlet, and/or bedspread.

*Each of these is unique in their own way, so it will be a matter of your preference and situation.

*Some things to consider are climate, washability, color and price point.

Towels

*It will be important to have bath, hand, and wash towels.  A tub mat and bath sheet, which is an oversized bath towel, should also be considered.

*We recommend a minimum of 2 sets of towels per person.  Ideally you should have 3 sets per person.

*Like the sheets, there should be enough towels to have a set in the bathroom, in the laundry room, and a backup set in the closet.

*A good towel option we can offer you is our MicroCotton Hotel Collection Towels.

Amenities

*This includes shampoo, conditioner, moisturizer, and body wash.  Some other amenities can include dental kits, skin cleanser, and shower caps.

*You will have to decide if you would like the amenities to be offered in mini flip-cap bottles or a dispenser which is much larger and can last for a longer period of time.

*Fragrance will also be important.  Some amenities can smell strong and fruity while others can offer a cleaner, more subtle scent.

*We recommend getting samples and trying them for yourself before deciding which to use.

Room Accessories

*Items such as coffee makers, luggage racks, and alarm clocks add comfort and convenience to your guest’s stay.

*Ice buckets, trays and wine chillers can be a nice addition.

*Guests might appreciate having a robe and slippers in the closet as well.
