6 Helpful Tips for Towel Washing

Hospitality Towels

Towels are essential in making your guests feel comfortable with their stay, and they want their towels to feel as fresh and clean as possible.  Have you given any thought to how you have been washing your towels?  There are many different ways people go about washing them, but there are some helpful tips that can help you.  You may already be using these, but maybe there are a few extra ideas included here that you can use for the next time you go to the laundry room.  Proper washing is important to keeping your hospitality towels fresh and making them last longer.

Tip #1: Wash New Towels Prior to Putting Them in Rooms for Your Guests (Unless Stated Room Ready)

  • Many towels originally purchased at the store or online come with a layer of silicone or similar substance that will make it harder for it to absorb.
  • This substance is what adds to the appeal to entice customers to purchase it.
  • Washing them first removes this substance.

Tip #2: Separate White from Colored Towels

  • Washing white and colored towels together will cause the white ones to grow dingy.
  • White should be washed with hot water, detergent, and non-chlorine bleach.
  • Hot water will help them keep their natural brightness.
  • Colorful towels turn out best when washed in warm water with detergent and color-safe bleach.

Tip #3: Keep Them Separate from Clothing

Hospitality Towels
Ganford Plain
  • Towels and clothes are usually made differently.
  • They usually require different settings in the wash based on their material and thickness.
  • Works best for washing purposes if they are each done in separate loads.

#4: Fabric Softener is not Recommended.

Fifth Avenue Towel
  • Vinegar should be used about once every three or four washes.
  • Too much use of fabric softener can wither away the fibers over time and make them less absorbent.
  • Vinegar will freshen and whiten them.
  • No vinegar smell is left behind.

Tip #5: How to Remove Bad Odors

InnStyle Ringspun Cotton Towel
  • Putting wet towels in the hamper and leaving them there for a while can cause a stale and musty odor.
  • Letting them stay in the washing machine for a long time once the cycle is complete can also create an unpleasant smell.
  • If they have an odor, first try washing the them with a half cup of baking soda because it is a natural deodorizer.
  • After that, rewash with the detergent you regularly use.

Tip #6: Wash Frequently

  • A personal towel should be washed at least once every three to four days.
  • Important to repeatedly wash them for sanitary reasons and to keep them smelling fresh.
  • Hang up towels on days they are not being washed to help them stay dry.
