Among the things you may want to consider:
- The climate at your establishment (A bed and breakfast in New England would likely want different blankets than a hotel in New Orleans.)
- The temperature in your room.
- The time of year. Do you have blankets for when the air conditioner is on and ones for when the heater is going?
- The size of the blankets. You need something large enough to cover your mattress, with room to tuck it underneath. Make sure to measure the width, length, and depth of the mattress before buying blankets.
Blanket materials
Cotton blankets are a favorite of homeowners and hoteliers. It’s a very breathable fabric, and one that can be washed often. It also becomes softer after a few washes.
Cotton blankets come in a number of different weaves, including herringbone, basket weave, honeycomb and waffle. You can also find cotton blankets that are blended with a synthetic material such as polyester or acrylic.

In colder climates, a blanket filled with duck or goose down can provide you with extra warmth. There are also synthetic down versions, which will simulate down but are washable and hypoallergenic.

Fleece blankets are also popular, helped along by people’s love of the warmth and softness they find in fleece jackets.
Most polyester fleece is environmentally-friendly as it is made from recycled bottles. It’s soft and wicks away moisture, while also providing warmth. Blankets made from fleece or Polartec can be washed and dried.

Modern technology such as Polartec can be wonderful, but some people prefer the comfort of the classic wool blanket. These blankets are great for keeping you warm in very cold weather.
They’re breathable and insulating but have a downside: they’re typically not washable, making it a difficult choice for innkeepers and vacation homeowners.
