3 Brilliant Ways to Properly Care for and Clean Pool Towels

Hospitality Pool Towels

Pool towels are exposed to a wide range of substances and liquids like sand, salt water, chlorine, sunscreen, sweat, and grass.  Sand can get caught in the pool towels, and grass and other liquids like spilled drinks can cause stains.  That is why the laundering process is so important. There are proper steps to laundering them and chlorine can have an impact on the quality and durability of them. The following is a list of steps to properly wash pool towels.

How to Wash Pool Towels

1) Shake Out Pool Towel

It is important to shake out pool towels first. Sand and other particles can get caught in the towel.  It is recommended to wait for the towel to dry first so the particles won’t stick to the wet towel.  Also, an excess amount of sand stuck in pool towels could cause damage to the washing machine.

2) Sort by Material and Color

Make sure to sort pool towels based on their material design as some towels can be made from cotton and others designed with microfiber. These towels have tags with washing instructions. Also, sort the towels by their color, whether they are light or dark, to avoid color disfiguration. Other towels and linens of similar color and texture can be added to the laundry cycle with the pool towels if the load isn’t large enough.

3) Wash on Normal Cycle

Pool towels often have chlorine or other fluids on them after being used, so it is essential that they are washed on a regular cycle compared to a gentler cycle. These pool towels will need time to soak in the soap to fully remove the chemicals like chlorine.  Powerful detergents like Tide are strong enough to fully remove sand particles, chemicals, etc. The use of chlorine bleach is not recommended as this can cause discoloration and fading in the fabric.

The Effects of Chlorine on Fabric

Chlorine is needed in swimming pools to help keep them clean and sanitary.  Dirt and other debris like leaves and grass get blown into the pool.  Along with the outside elements, humans can spread germs among themselves in the pools, so chlorine helps combat the spreading of viruses and bacteria.  However, chlorine can have a negative effect on fabric like pool towels and bathing suits.  Over time, chlorine has a tendency to cause linens to lose their bright colors and become dull.  While the fading of colors doesn’t occur instantaneously, the constant exposure of chlorine on fabric will slowly cause it to lose color.  This can happen more frequently in swimming pools that have higher levels of chlorine.  Along with losing color, chlorine has also been known to cause linens to wither.  The withering of the fabric will make the towel become so weak that it will eventually start to rip and become completely ruined.  The laundering process will remove the chlorine from the towels which will help preserve its durability.  This way, you will have more time to enjoy your pool towels before having to order new ones.
