When is It Time to Replace Your Bedding?

Often, property managers think of the bedroom as to where their housekeeping staff spends a large portion of their time cleaning and maintaining. Think about how much work is involved with cleaning out a bedroom between each guest stay. The bedding is laundered, bathrooms are cleaned, trash gets emptied, floors are vacuumed, and furniture gets dusted or sanitized. Sheets, blankets, pillows, duvet covers, and comforters are just a few of the many types of bedding that you might offer that needs to get laundered. With this process occurring so frequently, have you pondered how long each piece of bedding should last? This blog will explain when a property should replace its bedding.

Comforters

Comforters should be replaced if they are no longer keeping you warm like they used to.  Comforters have difficulty insulating air and heat as the fibers break down over time, and they start becoming thinner and flatter.  This is caused by repetitive use.  Also, any sign of rips or holes is a good indication to get a replacement.

Sheets

The laundering process is important in determining the life expectancy of sheets.  Sheets that use a harsher detergent or a rougher wash cycle may have a shorter life span than sheets that use a gentler cycle or that don’t get washed as frequently.  Having more than one set of sheets for each bed gives the fibers more time to breathe and extends the life of the sheets.  It is recommended to always have a sheet set on the bed, another sheet set stored in the closet, and a sheet set in the wash for each bed.  Guests that stain the sheets can cause permanent damage and make the sheets no longer useful.  However, sheets developed for the hospitality industry are more durable and will last longer.

Pillows

Pillows eventually lose the ability to stay firm and offer the essential neck and spine support that is needed to prevent the development of aches and pains while sleeping.  They should be replaced when they begin to lose their shape after being laundered.  It is time to buy new pillows when the filling starts to come out of the pillow as this is a sign of repeated use and wear-and-tear on the product.  Pillow Protectors can help extend the life of pillows by protecting them from stains, liquid spills, etc.

Mattress Encasements

The primary purpose of mattress encasements is to protect and extend the high quality of mattresses since they are a more valuable and often much more expensive product than the protectors.  A mattress encasement will need to get replaced if it gets coated with too many stains or liquid spills over time.  Holes, rips, and tears are a good indication that a new mattress encasement is necessary.  Even small rips mean that the high protection levels are beginning to diminish, and these rips can eventually lead to the formation of large holes, so it is important to get a fresh mattress encasement.
