Hospitality properties know the bed is probably the most important piece of furniture for the guests. It is what guests will be spending a lot of time on to refresh and recharge for their next day so it is critical that the bedding makes them feel comfortable and relaxed. Beds come in all shapes and sizes, but they all have the same job: giving you your guests a good night’s sleep. Beds will be the most comfortable when they are outfitted with the plush and soft bedding. It is important that bedding like sheets isn’t too tight or loose which can lead to displeasure and bad reviews. This blog lays out a guide to standard mattress sizes and sheet sizes. It will also inform readers on how to measure bedding and mattresses to ensure a comfortable night’s sleep for guests.
Twin Bedding
Twin beds are designed to allow one person to sleep comfortably, particularly sleepers who don’t need a lot of space. The standard sheet sizes for twin beds are:
- Mattress – 39 x 75 inches, 99 x 190 cm
- Bed skirt – 39 x 75 inches, 99 x 190 cm
- Fitted sheet – 39 x 75 inches, 99 x 190 cm
- Flat sheet – 68 x 96 inches, 173 x 244 cm
- Comforter – 68 x 86 inches, 173 x 218 cm
Full Bedding
Full-size beds fall between a twin and a queen in the bed hierarchy and are great for older kids, or for adults who want more room to move around than they’d get with a twin bed.
Also known as double beds, full-size beds give you more than enough room for two pillows, which is why full or double sheet sets come with two pillowcases.
The standard mattress sizes and sheet sizes for full-sized bedding are:
- Mattress – 54 x 75 inches, 137 x 90 cm
- Bed skirt – 54 x 75 inches, 137 x 90 cm
- Fitted sheet – 54 x 75 inches, 137 x 90 cm
- Flat sheet – 81 x 96 inches, 206 x 244 cm
- Comforter – 86 x 86 inches, 218 x 218 cm
Queen Bedding
Queen-size beds typically come with larger bedding, allowing sleepers to enjoy a cozier and more luxuriant rest.
The standard sheet sizes and mattress sizes for a queen bed are:
- Mattress – 60 x 80 inches, 153 x 203 cm
- Bed skirt – 60 x 80 inches, 153 x 203 cm
- Fitted sheet – 60 x 80 inches, 153 x 203 cm
- Flat sheet – 90 x 102 inches, 228 x 259 cm
- Comforter – 90 x 90 inches, 228 x 228 cm
King Bedding
King bedding is wider than queen beds by more than a foot. These beds offer sleepers plenty of room to toss and turn (and couples plenty of space of their own).
Unlike queen beds, king-sized beds have their own pillowcase sizes, with a king sheet set containing two pillowcases measuring 20 x 36 inches.
The standard mattress sizes and sheet size for king size beds are:
- Mattress – 76 x 80 inches, 198 x 203 cm
- Bed skirt – 76 x 80 inches, 198 x 203 cm
- Fitted sheet – 76 x 80 inches, 198 x 203 cm
- Flat sheet – 108 x 102 inches, 274 x 259 cm
- Comforter –104 x 90 inches, 264 x 229 cm
These measurements are different from what you’d find with California king beds, which are longer and narrower than standard or eastern king beds.
The standard sheet sizes and mattress sizes for California kings are:
- Mattress – 72 x 84 inches, 182 x 213 cm
- Bed skirt – 72 x 84 inches, 182 x 213 cm
- Fitted sheet – 72 x 84 inches, 182 x 213 cm
- Flat sheet –108 x 102 inches, 274 x 259 cm
- Comforter – 102 x 96 inches, 259 x 244 cm
It should also be noted that many mattresses are now deeper than they were in the past, creating a need for wider and longer flat sheets to allow sufficient material to be tucked under the mattress. Modern mattress depths can range from 9 to 24 inches.
Depth is also a factor when dealing with fitted sheets. The typical pocket in a fitted sheet is 15 inches deep, which will fit mattresses up to 17 inches deep.
However, the pocket depth of high-quality sheet styles will generally be greater than 15 inches deep. Bed skirts will typically have a drop length of 14 to 15 inches.

What is the depth of an older style matter that does not have pillow top? I can’t seem to find any fitted sheets that don’t come off the mattress when sleeping due to the deep pockets.
Hi Gloria,
A regular mattress, non pillow top can range between 8″ and 14″ in height. Try getting sheets with a wider elastic band that goes all the way around the fitted sheet and fits an 18″ mattress. If you would like more information or consultation please call 1-800-877-4667. We are happy to help you.
My mattress is 59×79 . Where do I find sheets that fit. Queen size are too big…full size are too small. I thought a standard Queen was 60×80…what kind of mattress did I buy???
Hi Jule,
A normal Queen size mattress is 59.75 inches x 79″. Queen size sheets should fit your bed. Just make sure the pocket size is right (the height of the mattress). It is better to go a little bigger than smaller to keep the sheets from popping off in the corners. If you need any more assistance please call 1-800-877-4667. We will be happy to help you.
Hello, I just got a box of HH sheets (and cases)at auction, brand new, do not want to unfold and measure. They say 126×128. Are you able to tell me what that means please? Thank you.
Hi Teresa, That sounds like King Extra Large flat sheets to me. I am not sure what HH means, maybe the manufacturer or a hotel they were made for?
The is excellent, it helps alot, thank you.
I have a king size bed with a mattress that is 15″ thick. I picked out a sheet set that will fit a mattress up to 18″ thick. My wife says that will be too big. I’m afraid a sheet that fits up to 15″ is going to be a little small especially if it shrinks a little. Which would be the best choice?
The 18″ fitted sheets should fit the 15″ mattress just fine. The elastic around the bottom of the sheet should hold it tight and it will be less likely to pop off on the corners. Thanks for asking and feel free to call the office to ask any other questions you may have at 267-354-6020.
Our king mattress measures 86×86 inches and I can’t seem to find a sheet set that would be right for it. I need to get one in a dark navy because my husband always has minor cuts that bleed all over the pillow cases and upper parts of the sheets. I’m willing to pay up to around $130 or so if necessary. Can you help?
Hi Susan,
Your mattress is an unusual size. It is longer than a Cal King and wider than a King. It will be difficult to find a fitted sheet for that size. I would recommend that you use a flat sheet and tuck it in. Depending on how deep your mattress is you might try this flat sheet in King size. https://www.innstyle.com/collections/bedding-sheets-cotton-poly-blend-200-blend-open-stock-martex-sheets.
